Okay, so you’re tired of dominating games of Trivial Pursuit, so much so that your friends won’t play against you anymore. Jeopardy is cool to watch, but nobody is around when you catch your digitally recorded episodes unless you can count Ren & Stimpy on your boxer shorts and Ben & Jerry eliminating the possibility of satisfying your trivia competition bloodlust. Well, if this at all sounds familiar to you, Quizzo is the solution to the trivia blues.
Really though, what is Quizzo? Originating in Ireland, Quizzo is a live trivia game played in pubs, taverns, speakeasies, blind pigs, or even Bar Mitzvahs. A typical Quizzo night consists of a quizmaster asking the gathered crowd the questions, playing music between the trivia, and providing a general atmosphere of entertainment. The trivia runs from difficult to easy spanning all nooks and crannies of the pop culture vernacular. The accomplished Quizzo player requires myriad knowledge to tackle anything from the crowd favorite famous faces (a category where the player identifies a celebrity from a photograph) to the antagonistically aggravating and ambiguous anagram descrambling puzzlers. Not to worry though, the informal trivia enthusiast will never be overwhelmed. Teams are encouraged because as the old adage says, “two heads are better than one”.
The way Quizzo works is simple. Patrons of the establishment form teams and compete against other teams in the bar. The Quizmaster provides all necessary materials, to wit: answer sheets and a writing implement. Next the Quizmaster, over a public address, asks the questions and the contestants respond on the provided sheets. Scores are tallied following each of three rounds and announced. Two speed bonus rounds trisect the rounds, with other surprises mixed in throughout the night. The game is simple to play and easy to administer. Quizzo provides any host pub the opportunity to create a unique atmosphere of fun and competition.
One needs only to witness Quizzo to realize the addictive nature of the game. Late-coming non-players often can be heard shouting out answers, a practice utterly forbidden, or joining late with no chance to win just to be a part of the Quizzo experience. Quizzo is perfectly suited to the pub environment and is non-intrusive to patrons of any given establishment who choose not to play, rare as they may be.
Fear not, fellow trivia junkies, for our day has come. The time has come to emerge from our parents’ basements, our one-bedroom apartments, our smoky dorm rooms, or wherever it is your trivia lust has been lurking all of those years.
